Frequently Asked Questions

We unserstand here at Suncoast that you might have many questions about training. These are some of the basic questions that we get asked on a regular basis. If you have more questions Please send us an email or give us a call and we will be more that happy to answer your questions.


Karate is the ultimate system of unarmed self defense. "Karate" means "empty hand"; without a weapon. As a method of self defense Karate specializes in striking blows, such as kicking, punching, chopping, slashing, clawing, stabbing and gouging techniques. It also includes a number of locking, throwing and choking techniques which are used in special cases, where these techniques are more practical than a strike.
There are mental rewards such as; self confidence, pride and patience. Patience and inner peace are found in training and performance of the art. For one to truly learn Karate, patience, pure motives and an attitude of serene determination and humbleness must be developed.

Yes, of course you (and your child) are more than welcome to come in and to sit back and watch one of our classes. Please give us a call at (941)923-6013 and we can let you know what days and class times are for your age group.

There are benefits to Martial Arts training for every age. Our Kids program starts at ages 4 to 5 years in old and meet on Monday and Wednesday at 530 to 645. Our teens also meet on Monday and Wednesday at 645 to 800. Adults classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday at 645 to 800. Beyond simply learning self-defense skills, and maintaining or improving physical fitness, students will develop: focus, discipline, respect, self-esteem, goal setting, and confidence. And for adults, martial arts' training is a great way to improve fitness and flexibility, and to learn practical self defense skills.

The first step is always the hardest. If you are ready give us a call and let us know you want to try out a class. Come on down and meet the staff. Please wear some comfortable sweat pants and a T-shirt. You will not need shoes because we do not wear them while we train. No jewelry please because it can break or it can cause injury to others.

It takes about four to five years to achieve a black belt, though individual performance and attendance play a factor. We will not test you unless we feel you are ready and that we have prepared you for this wonderful accomplishment.

Of course you can! Every person trains for diffreent reasons. Wether it is for physical fitness, self confidence, spiritual or self defense. We work with each person with the abilities and limitations. A wise martial arts master name Funakoshi one said that “The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants ”

NO ! We understand that many people can't make that commitment to a long term contract. We pride ourselves on the fact that our school sells itself and that we do not have to force our students into contracts.
